Industry News: Home dialysis modality use may increase
Currently, the majority of dialysis patients receive in-center treatment. However, that could change according to a new study conducted by BioTrends Research Group, Inc. This report, based on answers from 78 dialysis center medical directors and 34 dialysis nurses, covers usage of dialysis modalities and attitudes towards these modalities, as well as expected future use.
Medical directors who completed the online survey agreed that home dialysis is under utilized, largely due to patients' preferences for treatment. The report conveyed the directors' opinion that, if better understood, more patients would choose alternative dialysis treatment options such as home dialysis.
In fact, the report showed that many of the dialysis professionals who responded to the survey said they would choose home dialysis for their own treatment. The directors and nurses predict that their use of both PD and home hemodialysis will increase in the near future due to bundling payment systems that are becoming available.
