Adaptive Golf Therapy
In Omaha, NE, a program called Back 2 Swing gets individuals with disabilities back on the golf course-including those who have sustained injuries such as stroke and spinal cord injury. Shauna M. Fox, writing for Advance for OT, discovered a program run by Jena Munson provides the equipment and instruction on adaptive techniques to get clients golfing again.
"Rehab can go from not being able to pick up the golf tee to actually playing a round of golf," Munson said.
In this report, therapists have broken down rehabilitation for their clients into smaller steps that allow them to gain fine- and gross-motor control, balance and endurance. The biggest benefit, however, may be regaining self-esteem. And for many whose favorite leisure activity is a "social" round of 18 holes, they get to participate with friends and family.
Adaptive golf isn't easily accomplished, however, without some modifications in equipment. Recently, some courses have been able to provide single-rider golf carts funded by grants received through the USGA. In addition, companies are making golf clubs that allow golfers "to hit more accurately from a seated position."
Therapists can help local programs get started by:
• Researching available resources
• Suggesting golf as a leisure activity to clients
• Getting collaboration from golf and other professionals
• Attending adaptive sports workshops

Andrea Clark, Operations Specialist
Since joining Foundation a year ago, Andrea has been working on the front lines — but behind the scenes — to deliver the best experiences for our traveling therapists. Among her responsibilities: posting new jobs to our website, managing our Facebook page, managing client relationships, and helping produce this very newsletter. According to director, Bryan Smith, "Andrea has a great attitude and is an important part of our success."
Andrea's attention to detail ensures that every job assignment is entered accurately, with paperwork to match. This is a definite must when assisting recruiters who must pair a therapist's skills to a facility's needs.
So, what makes working at Foundation special? According to Andrea, "my supervisor and co-workers, who teach me something new every day and are always patient."
"My co-workers are more like friends than just co-workers," beams Andrea, "Everyone is really positive and they honestly care about one another." The Foundation rehab team is fortunate to have Andrea, a great asset and true partner in delivering the best for our therapists.
