Many stroke and heart failure patients not taking meds

In stroke patients, medication compliance hovers at approximately 75 percent according to a study led by Dr. Cheryl D. Bushnell of Wake Forest University. And new research out of Stanford University shows that "many heart failure patients are never prescribed recommended medications."

Syndicated news source, HealthDay, found that both reports identified a growing issue and cause for concern. In the first study, Dr. Bushnell observed that, "Those patients with more severe disability and those without insurance are at risk of not continuing medications."

From data collected on 2,598 patients seen in 106 U.S. hospitals for stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), 75.5 percent consistently took all the medications prescribed by their doctor, 20 percent were only taking half and 3.5 percent were not taking any of their medications just three months after their stroke. "This is something we have known, that long-term compliance is a problem and unless you target it, people sort of fall off the curve," said Dr. Steven R. Levine, chief of neurology at University Hospital Brooklyn. "Patients need more education and better stroke support systems."

In the second report, Dr. Dipanjan Banerjee discovered that doctors are not prescribing two medications known to be effective in managing heart failure. "What is concerning to us, when we took another look at the data, was we saw there is a plateau and, in some cases, a decrease in the use of [ACE inhibitors and beta blockers] medication" he said.

This may be attributed to doctors not prescribing the same old drugs - available as generics - but favoring newer, more expensive ones. Dr. Gregg C. Fonarow at UCLA said, "It is essential that evidence-based, guideline recommended therapies be provided to all heart failure patients who are eligible."

The results of the study suggest that new evidence-based approaches can result in substantial improvements in the use of the drugs.

Travis Nunley, Operations Manager

Eight-year Foundation employee, Travis Nunley, believes that his travel therapists are "members of the family." In his role as manager for the rehab staffing division, that makes his family quite large yet well cared for.

"The truth is they do all the real hard work while we are sitting in the office," states Nunley. He goes on to say that it is vital that every therapist working with Foundation be provided with safe and comfortable housing, receive constant communication and feel appreciated at all times.

A background in sales helped him, in the beginning, to understand the business of travel staffing. But to better serve his therapists, Nunley credits ongoing training, classes/education and instruction - the best that Foundation can provide. Ultimately, every therapist in the family can look forward to having Nunley grow with them, in their careers.
